Case Study
An interactive patient-personas microsite built with Health Quality Alberta, bringing patient voices from primary-care interviews into quality-improvement work across the province.
Health Quality Alberta is the provincial agency that measures and monitors health system performance and advises decision makers. Its work depends on evidence, and on making that evidence meaningful to the people who act on it.
For Portraits of Care, the agency wanted patient experiences from primary care to reach the people doing quality-improvement work in a form they would actually use. Practice facilitators and quality-improvement staff are the primary audience, with the public and decision makers as secondary audiences.

Portraits of Care turns real patient interviews into interactive personas that practice facilitators and quality-improvement staff can bring directly into their work. Rather than summarizing experiences into charts, the microsite lets each persona speak in narrative form, keeping the person at the centre of the evidence.
Instead of a traditional report, we shaped the findings as persona narratives, so the experiences behind the data stay front and centre for the people using them.
Every persona narrative is drawn from real patient interviews conducted in primary care, keeping the voices authentic to the people who shared them.
Audio elements bring a human register to the personas, letting quality-improvement teams hear patient perspectives rather than only read them.
The microsite moved through multiple structured rounds of review with the Health Quality Alberta team, with fast iteration on feedback at every stage.
Portraits of Care was delivered on WordPress so Health Quality Alberta's own team maintains it, updating and extending the microsite on their own platform without depending on us for day-to-day changes. It lives on the agency's own website at hqa.ca.
This engagement is part of Mentee's health-equity work amplifying underrepresented patient voices, bringing lived experience into the rooms where care is measured and improved.
Whether you're envisioning a digital tool, shaping a community-led engagement project, or bringing stories and knowledge to life — we'd love to collaborate.
